ATHABASCA RIVER HIGH STREAMFLOW ADVISORY:
The River Forecast Centre (RFC) is monitoring a precipitation event expected this weekend across Alberta, detailed weather forecast is below. In response to the forecast rainfall, the RFC anticipates water level rises of approximately 1.0 to 2.0 metres depending on the location along the mainstem and tributaries of the Athabasca and North Saskatchewan rivers.
High Streamflow Advisories have been issued for both basins due to these expected water level rises. At this time, widespread flooding is not anticipated; however, some low-lying areas adjacent to the rivers may experience localized impacts.
Note: This forecast is subject to change as the weather system evolves. The RFC has been in touch with ECCC meteorologists to identify the most likely weather scenario. River forecast updates will be issued and revised as necessary.
Weather Conditions:
Beginning late Friday, June 19, organized rainfall is expected over much of the province. The highest amounts of rainfall are expected to fall between the morning of Saturday, June 20 and the afternoon of Sunday, June 21. During this time, areas of central and northern Alberta may receive between 40 to 80 mm, and local amounts of up to 100 mm. Higher precipitation amounts are expected from the Nordegg and Drayton Valley areas east through the City of Edmonton to the Saskatchewan border. The northern boundary of the higher rainfall amounts is the Whitecourt areas, and this extends south to the Ponoka area.
